February 20, 2026 My father used to own AT&T U-Verse DSL internet (along with a landline), but our service randomly went out one day. He decided that the price he was paying for a service that he couldn't use, along with poor customer service, was not worth it. I took over for the internet services, and I remember receiving cards in the mail for Verizon 5G Home Internet, which is a competitor to AT&T Internet Air and T-Mobile 5G Home Internet, since we don't receive fiber in our area.
Verizon was my first thought when it came to home internet, given our reduced trust in AT&T after the data breach, and T-Mobile was not providing its home internet services at the time. I also chose to avoid T-Mobile since they are the most popular provider in the area (a TON of people here use Metro by T-Mobile), which means congested cell towers and reduced speeds.
My internet speeds could be better, but for the most part, I get by alright with gaming on most days. There are days when the cell towers are so congested that I can't play multiplayer shooters like Marvel Rivals or Overwatch 2 because I would get disconnected and kicked from lobbies due to high ping, packet loss, and dropped frame rate. There are even those awful days when my service is out completely. Other than that, my current internet plan suits my basic needs. I am not a highly competitive gamer; I play very casually. The main driving factor into getting me to switch is if my internet connection becomes so poor that it interferes with the ability for me to be able to use it comfortably.
I do not have other options here that are affordable yet work well. Our household makes too much to be able to qualify for the ACP (Affordable Connectivity Program), but since I'm paying for the wifi, and I earn a limited income, I cannot afford to pay for Spectrum cable internet, either (and I have heard negative things about them). Where I live, our options are limited, and 5G is basically that healthy balance between affordable and efficient.
