Rise Broadband Fiber
October 04, 2024 Having fiber internet is fantastic, but it does come with one important caveat: you need to have the hardware to take full advantage of the internet speed that you're purchasing. For about a year, I was paying Rise the full monthly amount that I am now ($30-40 a month), but only using 1/10th of the internet speed. The reason is because the basic router offered by Rise maxes out around 30 mb/s (offering only CAT4-capable speeds). If I wanted to rent-to-own a higher-end router from the get-go, I could have. But then my monthly cost would have gone up too, and pretty drastically. In the end, I decided to save up and buy my own gaming router (featuring ports for CAT5 ethernet cables) to now get about 250-350mb/s. If I ever choose an alternate fiber internet provider, I'll be able to take my router with me. But I know not everyone is comfortable owning/updating/securing their own router. Long story short, fiber internet is absolutely fantastic... but not every provider is going to freely provide the hardware to get what you're paying for. It's a good thing to be aware of when choosing a provider!

August 07, 2024 My internet provider is odd because I pay one government entity for the access to the line itself, but another provider for the "service". Surprisingly, the government entity is the reliable, customer service focused half of the equation. The ISP that manages my access is expensive, hard to work with, difficult to contact, gets bought out by a bigger company every year or so, and randomly adds charges to our bill that we then have to spend hours removing. So I love my incredibly fast fiber connection, but I detest the company I'm forced to use to "manage" it!

October 21, 2023 We changed from the free option of Google Fiber to Xfinity and have been amazed. Our downloading time is not even comparable, it is so much faster. We got the mid plan and my husband works from home and so far we have absolutely nothing but good things to say. Also we could always upgrade plans if we ever have more devices and need it as well.

September 25, 2023 Utopia has been wonderful as far as speed and reliability goes! The downside would be that you have to pay for the equipment for the home and it doesn’t go with you when you move, even though it is quite costly. My only problems have been with our consistency in signal, although I suspect it’s because of our router and not the fiber itself. We only have to pay $50 a month so the price is amazing and I couldn’t imagine going through another provider in this current economy.

January 14, 2023 Xfinity gets the job done for the most part, but I sometimes have internet outages, but their apps and websites are a little problematic to navigate. Sometimes some webpages crash or are mistaken for malicious websites as well. I also tried to pay a bill but it charged me twice. Otherwise, I got more speed at times than the plan showed, so I can't complain much about the speed when it works normally.
