SEI Communications Fiber

August 07, 2024

Unfortunately for the people living in my area, Seiontec Systems has essentially had a monopoly on the local internet service market due to their service being the closest thing to "decent" internet anyone has actually had access to here for decades.

Where I live - Amherst County, Virginia - at least half or more of the citizenry lives rural, and is therefore oftentimes too far away from major roadways to recieve fiber-optic-based internet services; due to both that and the fact that many large companies view urbanized areas as being worth their time moreso than rural ones, a lot of citizens either don't have internet, or rely on subpar providers that only offer wireless service that's oftentimes quite expensive, or ones that offer satellite-based service that's spotty at best due to trees blocking the satellites' link to the router in a customer's home, and are also oftentimes quite expensive.

The only other kind of internet service that people can acquire is the microwave-based one that Seiontec Systems provides, and since microwave-based internet requires the device receiving the signal to have an unwavering line of sight to a fixed location that the service is transmitting from, only some people can even have said internet service; due to the exclusivity of the service, and the fact that Seiontec Systems' service is still technically the "fastest" internet available, they can charge an exorbitant subscription fee for their service.

My family has the highest-speed "package" that Seiontec offers, and it's supposed to boost our internet's download speed to 30.0 megabits per second (Mbps) - the fastest it usually runs is 20.0 Mbps, which is actually the speed that the package below ours is supposed to offer; we subscribed to the higher-tier package because the one we had originally gave a lower speed than it was supposed to offer, as well - and in both instances, the speed has consistently gone down even more by at least five megabits every single night between the hours of 8:00 PM and 12:00 AM; for reference, as of February of 2024, the median download speed for internet in the United States of America was 242.38 Mbps (according to Speedtest.net).

The company's customer service has arguably been more abysmal than the technological service overall - when their systems have been down, they've shut off all contact with customers; when customers have finally reached them, they've had no answers for them in regards to when services could possibly be available again, or even what happened to said services; and on multiple occasions, they've shown their inability to build resilient hardware, as we've had to call them to replace everything from our microwave to it's control panel, since they built both out of materials that couldn't withstand some slightly bad weather, or local wildlife.

The best aspect of the company's service in general has been their repair teams - outside of the fact that most all of them do not speak English fluently, the company's repairmen have been excellent - they've been courteous, and tried their best to communicate with customers; they've always fixed the issue in less than two hours if possible, and never left a job undone; and they have always arrived when they said they would.

Recently, they have finally begun to hire more helpful customer service representatives, and made hardware of a higher quality - but unfortunately for them, it seems as though the old phrase "too little, too late" rings true - when Autumn comes, there should be fiber-optic internet cables running through my area, courtesy of the "Firefly" internet provider; we are on the early waiting list for the service, and as soon as it arrives, we plan to unsubscribe from Seiontec Systems' service.
