Starlink Satellite
January 03, 2026 I live in a very rural community on acreage with no access to fiber or hard-wired internet. Previously available satellite options (HughesNet, etc) were abysmally slow and entirely non-functional for those of us in remote jobs that rely heavily on video calls. Starlink became available to us about 18 months ago and has been transformative. Although installation was a little bit cumbersome - especially having to install it on the roof, as someone who is afraid of heights, once it was installed it has been incredibly reliable. It is fast enough to not only work remotely in a video-call intensive position, but also to stream on multiple devices simultaneously with no lag or buffering. Earlier options for satellite internet used to be comparable to dial-up, or as we liked to say, like a hamster running on a wheel in the basement to power the internet connection. Starlink is almost more reliable than the internet available at my office in a Fortune-100 company. Throughout the past 18 months, I can recall only one 5-minute period where it was unable to connect to the satellites due to an extreme weather event. We had torrential rain, coupled with hail, which proved just slightly too much for the dish to overcome. Once the bulk of the storm had passed, it came right back online. My only complaint about the entire system is the price. The initial purchase price for the equipment and the monthly cost is a bit pricey, but for the quality of service and having no other options, it has been life changing and I'd do it again any chance I got.
